What are the words you say to yourself?
Under wraps, behind the scenes, but yet, they take the steering wheel of your life at the very moments you wish you could feel confident and in your power.
The internalised words of a society that has thrived for generations on us never quite feeling enough.
When I support my clients within 1:1 + group spaces, I guide them through an embodied, nervous system-up approach to call those forward + start to rebuild them…
Because trying to fight them doesn’t work.
Trying to belittle + tell yourself to just pull your socks up, doesn’t work.
Writing affirmations that don’t feel true over and over again, doesn’t work.
Pursuing success and achievements to overcompensate + prove the voice wrong, doesn’t work.
We have to courageously + curiously hold them up to the light...
🐚 Be in dialogue with them through the body (where the root of this pattern lives).
🐚 Instil safety + reassurance for the younger versions of us that learned that these beliefs would keep us “safe”.
🐚 Meet them + ourselves with utmost compassion + respect.
🐚 Reconnect to what we truly stand for by consciously choosing how we will live, love + lead.
🐚 AND commit to making micro choices every day that strengthen a new script.
I’d love you to explore these questions + mini-practice… (and comment below to tell me what arises from them!)
🍃 What is your inner critic piping up about at the moment?
🍃 In what areas of your life?
🍃 What could they be trying to protect you from?
🍃 Are you willing to accept that no matter how loud they shout, they are a frightened younger part of you who learned that avoiding the risk of failure/rejection/judgment and staying in your familiar comfort zone, is more important than you reaching your full potential?
So next time you hear them arise, try this mini-practice...
1) Place a hand on the heart (or wherever you sense them holding in the body)
2) Offer them a deeper breath - not to make them go away, but to give you the capacity to be with the charge of sensations that will be arising with them
3) Now speak directly to them...
“I see you. I hear that you’re afraid and I understand why you’re here. You’ve played such an important role in keeping me safe. I am here supporting you now.”
4) Notice with compassionate curiosity what comes through, what shifts in the body, the breath, your mood, your energy levels.
Change only comes when we learn how to gradually turn towards these parts of ourselves and be able to hold the discomfort of them without becoming overpowered by them.
Their roots will often run deep, so this work takes time, but with every choice you make from a place of compassion, self-leadership + safety, your inner narrative begins to shift.
